Frequently Asked Questions
About Rubber Roofs

What is EPDM

Firestone RubberCover EPDM is a 100% cured single-ply roofing membrane made of a synthetic rubber Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Terpolymer.

Since 1980, more than 1,000 million m² of Firestone EPDM membranes have been successfully installed on commercial, industrial and residential roofs worldwide.

How long will the EPDM membrane last

Firestone RubberCover EPDM membranes offer unmatched resistance to UV radiation, ozone, alkali rains and high or low temperatures.

Recent studies show that the membrane has a life expectancy up to more than 50 years, even when exposed to sunlight.

Which substrates are suitable

Compatible substrates are wood, PIR and PUR insulation, bitumen, concrete, masonry, aluminium, zinc and lead. Firestone RubberCover EPDM can overlay virtually any old roof provided the roof decking is sound .

Water based adhesive is used on timber substrates, contact adhesive is used on other surfaces.

Must the surface be cleaned before adhesion

The surface must be clean, smooth, dry and free of sharp and/or loose objects and/or foreign materials such as oil, grease, and/or other contaminants.

Therefore, it is recommended to sweep the substrate with a brush prior to the installation of the membrane.

Is maintenance required

No specific maintenance is required for a Firestone RubberCover EPDM roofing system. Firestone, however, recommends a yearly inspection of the roof.

What is the fire rating of the membrane

Standard membrane is AC fire rated. AA rating can be achieved if required by ballasting the roof area.

Can I walk on the membrane

EPDM is perfect for periodic maintenance foot traffic. It is not suitable for heavy duty foot traffic and should be protected with a paving or timber decking system.

Can the membrane be ballasted

Yes, it is possible to cover the membrane with gravel, pavers or timber decking but we strongly recommend that the membrane is fully adhered to the substrate.

Firestone recommends the use of a protective geotextile (polyester 300 g/m²) between the membrane and any ballast.
